"Black Hole Tidal Effects From Scattering Amplitudes"

Scattering processes of massless fields on black hole (BH) background give a gauge invariant way to study the BH finite size effects. In this talk, I will discuss a novel "near-far factorization" found in the analytic solution to the Teukolsky equation which manifestly separates the scatterings by the background geometry and the tidal effects. By employing this method, we can provide a gauge-invariant demonstration of the vanishing tidal Love numbers of Kerr BHs.  Furthermore, I will talk about the extensions of this approach to study BH dissipations and investigate the intriguing renormalization group (RG) running behavior of the "dynamical" tidal response. In the end, I will also discuss the constraints on these tidal response coefficients from the current gravitational wave (GW) observations.
