In our research group we investigate quantum systems of ultracold atoms and molecules. We cool atoms and molecules to ultracold temperatures just a sliver above absolute zero - reaching the coldest temperatures allowed by nature. Close to absolute zero, the behavior of particles is ultimately determined by the laws of quantum mechanics. With ultracold gases of interacting atoms and molecules we create new quantum systems and perform quantum simulation of strongly interacting quantum matter. The special focus of our group is the creation and investigation of ultracold molecules that interact via dipolar long-range interactions. Those will allow us to study exotic quantum phases and transitions between them.
