Shy Genel is an Adjunct Associate Research Scientist at Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory and is based at the Flatiron Institute's Center for Computational Astrophysics. He obtained his PhD at the Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics near Munich, Germany in 2011, and has held post-doctoral positions at Harvard University and at Columbia University as a Hubble Fellow. Dr. Genel studies galaxy formation using high-performance numerical simulations of large-scale cosmological volumes. Among other topics, he made contributions to our understanding of the growth of galaxies and their dark matter halos over time, of the evolution of their angular momentum, and the role that random processes might be playing in setting galaxy properties
