The Columbia Physics Department maintains close links with many other departments (through joint faculty appointments), and participates in a number of specialized research centers and laboratories both on-campus and off-campus.
The Astronomy Department - We are both physically close to the department (which occupies the top floors of Pupin) as well as intellectually close with significant collaborations between our astrophysics faculty and our astronomy colleagues
The Applied Physics Department - Two of our faculty (Stormer, Pinczuk) have joint appointments in both departments.
The Barnard Physics Department - One of the faculty there (Friedberg) holds a joint appointment in both departments and, along with two others (Halpin-Healy, Mukherjee), we share courses and research opportunities.
The Electrical Engineering Department - One of our faculty (Heinz) has a joint appointment in both departments.
The Mathematics Department - One of our faculty (Greene) holds a joint appointment in both departments.
RESEARCH CENTERS & INSTITUTES:
Materials Science and Research Engineering Center - Our faculty work as part of an interdisciplinary team of university, industrial, and national laboratory scientists and engineers working together to develop and examine new types of mixed organic/inorganic materials and structured thin films.
Center for Electron Transport in Molecular Nanostructures - All of our condensed matter faculty are members of the center which explores our fundamental physical understanding of charge transport in molecular materials and synthesize new materials leading to better performance with wide applications.
ISCAP: Institute for Strings, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics - ISCAP is established to foster an interdisciplinary (it is jointly sponsored by the Departments of Astronomy, Mathematics, and Physics) approach to the study of cosmology, and dark matter in the Universe.
Environmental Molecular Science Institute - One of our faculty is a member of this Institute which studies molecular-level transport and chemistry to enhance the generality and predictive power of large-scale models and to identify the possible chemical and biological factors influencing contaminant decay rates.
Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory - Is a collaborative research effort between the Department of Astronomy and the Department of Physics.
Microelectronics Sciences Laboratories/Columbia Radiation Laboratory - The Columbia Radiation Laboratory presently supports multi-disciplinary research in the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, and Chemical Engineering.
Nevis Laboratories - This off-campus laboratory is home to experimental astrophysics, nuclear physics, and particle physics. It houses a large modern machine shop, clean rooms, and state-of-the-art electronics shops with engineering support staff, computing facilities, and office space.
CEPSR Cleanroom - This facility is dedicated to providing the instrumentation, technical expertise, and team-teaching environment to stimulate collaborative research in nanoscale technology. The facility supports the creation and evaluation of devices and materials with state-of-the-art fabrication.
