Columbia Society for Women in Physics

Welcome to the Columbia Society for Women in Physics!

We are a group of undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs that aims to promote and encourage the participation of women and other underrepresented groups in Physics. Our gatherings provide a friendly, informal and supportive environment where participants can share their experience and seek for advice.

Our next event:
Date:  Wednesday, December 14th at 6pm
Place:  Rabi Room in the Pupin Theory Center, 8th floor of Pupin
Description:  For this meeting we would like to extend the conversation and invite anyone who identifies as a member of an underrepresented group in physics — whether based on gender, ethnicity, orientation, or otherwise — to join us. We will be looking at scientific articles that focus on race and orientation in physics and other STEM fields. The articles we will discuss are listed below. If you don’t get the chance to read them ahead of time, we will provide a summary. Stats about minority representation in physics: https://www.aps.org/programs/minorities/resources/statistics.cfm, racial minorities receive fewer grants in science: http://science.sciencemag.org/content/333/6045/1015 (more recently see http://www.nature.com/news/nih-to-probe-racial-disparity-in-grant-awards-1.15740), APS climate report for LGBT physicists: https://www.aps.org/programs/lgbt/upload/LGBTClimateinPhysicsReport.pdfFood and drink will be provided.
