Columbia Society for Women in Physics

Welcome to the Columbia Society for Women in Physics!

We are a group of undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs that aims to promote and encourage the participation of women and other underrepresented groups in Physics. Our gatherings provide a friendly, informal and supportive environment where participants can share their experience and seek for advice.

Our next events:
Date:  Thursday, April 27th, 6pm
Place: Pupin Theory Center, 8th floor of Pupin
Description: For this meeting we would like to extend the conversation and invite anyone who identifies as an ally or who is simply interested in getting to know our group and be involved in the conversation about underrepresented groups in physics. Over the course of this year, we have discussed the articles below. We found them to be both interesting and informative and feel that the wider community could benefit from reading and discussing them. The articles we will discuss regard 1) impostor syndrome (link) 2) underrepresented groups and LGBT representation in physics  (link 1, link 2)  and 3) the "John/Jennifer" study regarding gender bias (link 1, link 2). Feel free to join even if you did not have time to read them, as we will be giving a (brief) summary of the material. Food and drink will be provided.
Date: Wednesday, May 31st, 12:30 - 1:30 pm
Place: TBD (on campus)
Description: The world science festival is a week long public science festival that takes place in New York annually. This year, as part of the festival, CSWP will host a panel and Q&A for high school girls interested in science. They will later go on to take lab tours at Columbia. We are looking for undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs to serve on the panel. Please reach out if you are interested!
